Don’t Forget Your Phone Etiquette

6 April 2009 in Realtor Etiquette

Nothing says “Your not that important to me” more than answering your cell phone while you’re engaged in a conversation with someone else.

I’m not quite sure when this obsession with always having your phone on and always having to answer it began… but most of the times it just demonstrates bad manners.

When I’m with a client, I turn my phone off.  Not vibrate…. off!!!

Any client I’m with deserves my full attention and professionalism, and 99.9% of the time there is no call that is so important that it can’t wait until my time with this client is over.

If I’m with someone who has to excuse themselves to take a call, then it’s a signal to me that whatever we were discussing just isn’t as important as the call that just “had to be” answered seems to be.

Agents that come into my office to discuss an issue, only to tell me that they “have to take this call”, usually find me gone when they’re done talking.  My time’s important too, and I have better things to do than listen to half a conversation.

Unless you’re the person who’s in charge of protecting the rest of us from an eminent catastrophe, remember to use all of your cell phone’s features. The off button is one of them.

For those who think that getting so many calls from other individuals shows the rest of us just how important you are, it doesn’t impress me one bit.

It demonstrates to me that you’re disorganized, don’t know how to prioritize, and that you’re a real nincompoop when it comes to social graces.
